Mobile Tickets

Date: June 26 2009 Mobile services

The UK government has confirmed that it is looking at giving more people the option of purchasing tickets for buses and trains with their mobile phones.

According to transport minister Lord Adonis, using smart ticketing more widely across the country could help improve interchange between different types of public transport.

He cited Japan as an example of one nation where consumers regularly use their handsets as their ticket to travel on subways and railways.

"By extending the use of smart ticketing technology, we can transform people's perception and experience of public transport," the minister commented.

Lord Adonis added that using mobile phones in this way could be "critical" towards making the public transport sector more cohesive.

Transport operators across the world are already looking at various possible ways in which handsets could be used to improve processes.

For example, German airline Lufthansa recently confirmed that it is considering allowing passengers to use their mobile phones as boarding passes on its flights.
